I've decided on the Baudelaire pattern as my first attempt at socks. I'm not sure what I can't resist more, the decadent lace pattern in deep red, or the literary association (the designer has photographed the socks with the title page from the Flowers of Evil!). It appeals to many sides of me, to say the least.
Here's what I've done so far:
There all is order and beauty,
Luxury, peace, and pleasure.
~Baudelaire, Invitation to the Voyage
Update: I've been sick and haven't been able to knit much, but I did manage to finish the foot and am now working on the leg. Finally have some decent light for a picture too, though the red is still not exactly accurate (*glares at expensive camera in frustration*).
A finished sock coming soon...I hope.

It looks lovely so far. I like the cable detail up the sides of the pattern. Truly, I have to stop looking at other folks' socks because then I put down the pair I am knitting and begin a new pattern. This may explain why I have to buy new needles at least once a month.
Wow! Good for you! I too am making my first pair of socks, but I'm not nearly brave enough to tackle one with a lace pattern yet. I love the Baudelaire socks though, so they're definitely on my to-do list for later. Yours looks great so far!
What a great start to the sock. I'm not familiar with this pattern, but will have to try it--I haven't done toe-up socks yet!
Oh, and you've been tagged. You can read the rules on my blog. Sorry! :-)
They look great so far! Beautiful pattern.
